Institute for Corporate Counsel
December 3, 2013
Private Club, Downtown Los Angeles
A Partnership of In House and Outside Counsel
The Institute for Corporate Counsel is the premier Los Angeles conference for in-house and outside counsel and those who advise them. The Institute brings together over 500 professionals annually, including in-house counsel, outside attorneys, corporate officers and directors, accountants, consultants, HR professionals, litigation support professionals, public relations professionals, and legal assistants.
Law, Business and Politics
The day-long Institute focuses on the intersection of law, business and politics. The Institute provides a venue for our panelists and participants to better understand Los Angeles' evolving business environment, as well as best practices and changes in the law which can impact business operations. The Institute provides current information, legal guidelines, and practical advice which can be immediately put into practice in an in-house legal department or a law firm. The 2013 Institute will provide meaningful opportunities to interact with in-house counsel, including a luncheon, networking refreshment breaks and hosted cocktail reception. CE units for lawyers and accountants will be available.
Planning for the 2013 Institute is underway, and will be sure to feature the big names, informative panels and real-world takeaways as seen at past events. We can confirm that Governor Pete Wilson (ret.) will be one of the featured speakers at the 2013 Institute. Other confirmed speakers include David Houston, editor of the Daily Journal, and Nancy Laben, General Counsel and Senior Vice President, Legal at AECOM. Check back often for updates and further programming details.
A Review of the 2012 Institute for Corporate Counsel
The 2012 Institute opened with an exciting conversation with Governor Gray Davis (ret.), former gubernatorial nominee William Simon, Jr., and broadcast journalist and attorney Manny Medrano on the State of California. The Honorable Chris Cox, former SEC Chairman, closed out the day as he explored the deeper currents of risk lurking beneath Washington's and California's balance sheets. Noted political and media strategist Dan Schnur provided the keynote address for the 2012 Institute on the effect of changes in communications technology and new rules for political fundraising on elections and the government.
Another notable session was an afternoon update by the general counsels of Activision Blizzard, Edwards Lifesciences and Warner Bros. Entertainment who provided tips on managing risks across a global business. Mid-day concurrent sessions were organized into "tracks" of programming focusing on important updates on IP strategies for in house lawyers, and best practices for working with your board of directors, with guidance from in house counsel from Mattel, Qualcomm and Southern California Edison. Other topics included addressing and avoiding privilege and ethics issues in investigations, boilerplate provisions in contracts, and current employment law issues.
