Professor Ed McCaffery brings an interdisciplinary, accessible and even humorous approach to the study of tax law in particular and the impact of law and economics on modern life in general. His just released second book, FAIR NOT FLAT: HOW TO MAKE THE TAX SYSTEM BETTER AND SIMPLER, has been praised by former Senators Bill Bradley and Bob Packwood and favorably reviewed in the national media. His first book, TAXING WOMEN-recently released in paperback-was hailed by former Congresswoman Pat Schroeder as a "must-have primer for any woman who wants to understand how our current tax system affects her family's economic situation." McCaffery has his work extensively on radio and television shows across the country, testified before both chambers of Congress, and met with politicians and their staffs to discuss possibilities for tax reform. His work has helped to further the movements to repeal the so-called marriage penalty and death tax.

McCaffery is a frequent contributor to the popular media. He has written for THE WALL ST. JOURNAL, USA TODAY, The L. A. TIMES, WORKING WOMAN, The SEATTLE TIMES, The PROGRESS REPORT and elsewhere, and has been featured in stories in MONEY MAGAZINE, GLAMOUR, The WALL STREET JOURNAL, and WORKING WOMAN among others. McCaffery has written over a dozen scholarly articles in such publications as the Yale Law Journal and Philosophy & Public Affairs. He has presented papers at academic conferences in the U.S. and abroad. He has served as an advisor to the Russian Federation on tax reform, and worked as an issues advisor for the Bill Bradley for President Campaign.

McCaffery graduated summa cum laude, phi beta kappa from Yale College with a bachelor's degree in both classics and philosophy. After teaching high school for two years, he graduated magna cum laude with a juris doctor degree from Harvard Law School, after which he practiced as a tax lawyer specializing in estate planning and real estate for four years. Since joining the USC Law School faculty in 1989, McCaffery has added a master's degree, phi kappa phi, in economics. McCaffery visited at Yale Law School during the 1993-94 school year, and has since 1994 held a joint appointment at USC and at Caltech. He serves as the Executive Director and Chair of the Planning Committee for the USC Institute on Federal Taxation, now in its 54th year, and is the founder and initial director of the USC-Caltech Center for the Study of Law & Politics, an inter-disciplinary research group.
