Intellectual Property Institute

The Intellectual Property Institute has forged a reputation for gathering national speakers to analyze sophisticated topics and provide practical takeaways to attendees. Focusing on copyright, patent and trademark law, the Institute features morning plenary sessions, a luncheon keynote address, afternoon tracked breakout sessions, and five networking opportunities, including a hosted cocktail reception at the end of the day.

Past speakers have included Federal Circuit Court of Appeals Judges Kozinski (9th Cir.), Wardlaw (9th Cir.), Leval (2nd Cir.), Linn (Fed. Cir.), Mayer (Fed. Cir.), and Michel (Fed. The 2012 Institute

Seven federal judges, eight in-house counsel, four leading academics, and top practitioners joined leading IP practitioners for a day of learning and networking. Chief Judge Randall R. Rader (Fed. Cir.) provided the keynote address. Professors Lemley, Nimmer and McCarthy returned for their popular annual discussion, the "IP Year in Review." In the morning keynote session, Chief Judge Rader joined Judge David Folsom (E.D. Tex.) and Judge Andrew J. Guilford (C.D. Cal.) in a session on the judiciary’s view of patent topics, moderated by Morgan Chu In the afternoon, Chief Judge Alex Kozinski (9th Cir.), Judge Dean D. Pregerson (C.D. Cal.), and Judge Christina A. Snyder (C.D. Cal.) participated in a panel discussion on copyright and trademark issues, moderated by Russell Frackman. Judge Margaret M. Morrow (C.D. Cal.) participated in a panel on the management of complex cases. Other topics included appellate advocacy, practical patent damages issues, the first sale doctrine, a review of the law of ideas and the submission of ideas, the entertainment industry and social networking media, and the new Internet infrastructure and trademark rights protections.
