USC Law Alumni Profile
Alan Kang, Class of 2004
Now that I am living in the real world, I've gained a much stronger grasp of the principles, concepts and laws taught in class.
Where do you work? What are you up to?
I am CEO and General Counsel of CHUMBA Racing – a high-end bicycle manufacturer located in Anaheim, California. We are a race-inspired company - and recently won a silver medal at the Masters World Championships in Pra Loup, France. Aside from handling legal matters - I oversee production, personnel, and sales and marketing activities.
How has USC Law had an impact on your career?
Having a law degree is a definite advantage in business. USC Law gave me a solid foundation to navigate the legal environment that the business operates within. My education at USC Law allows me to incorporate specific rules on how a business must operate within the context of contract law, personnel matters, and intellectual property. Further, the general principles of critical and strategic thinking, intensive research, and comprehension of complex matters helps me think outside of the box. This creates a competitive and innovative approach to business and manufacturing.
Which course was the most challenging for you (and why)?
I found business organizations to be a difficult class. This was largely because talking about principles that affect a business in the abstract without real people and actual stakes involved made it somewhat challenging to see the larger picture. Now that I am living out the situations that were taught in class -- dealing with corporate structures as they relate to the law -- I've gained a much stronger grasp of the principles, concepts, and laws that were taught in class.
What advice do you have for current students?
I would advise to take a grain of salt when listening to what society, the media, and your peers influence and pressure you to think, desire, or seek for your life. USC Law will provide the tools to go out and do what you are passionate about. Stick to your convictions, persist, and go after your dreams.
